GPS On All Phones by 2018?
October 10, 2011No Comments

There was a time that having GPS capability on a smart-phone was considered unique and a premium feature. Most smart-phones offer that feature these days. Android and iOS devices have done a great job killing off the PND market. The Federal Communications Commission has issued a ruling that forces all handset makers to include GPS capability in their devices by 2018. The goal is to allow emergency workers to find those in need easier.
This rule won’t affect a whole lot of phones on the market today. 85% of current phones already have GPS in them. It should not be difficult for handset makers to be compliant with this rule by 2018. This ruling does open up a whole host of privacy concerns that will surely play out in the upcoming years.
